Cynthia Erivo gives “evil” moviegoers permission to sing in the theater

Since Evil With the musical hitting theaters on November 22nd, there has been considerable debate over whether fans of the musical should sing along while surrounded by other moviegoers. Much like talking and texting are frowned upon in the cinema, the question is, is it impolite to sing along to popular song lyrics and potentially spoil the experience for other viewers? Or should fans of the film have the opportunity to indulge in the joy and fun of reciting the lyrics to their favorite songs?

Evil Star Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba in the record-breaking box office hit, joins the discussion. As for Erivo, fans have every reason to feel encouraged to sing along.

“I’m okay with it,” Erivo said Thursday in an interview with Hoda Kotb on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade broadcast. “We’ve spent so long singing it ourselves, now it’s time for everyone else to sing along. It’s wonderful.”

Demonstrations of Evil In AMC theaters, a message is displayed to viewers before the film asking them not to sing or join in during the film. A spokesman for AMC, Ryan Noonan, explained the theater’s reasoning to the Indianapolis Star.

“AMC has a long-standing policy prohibiting disruptive behavior. The Evil “The preshow spot captures the themes of the film and reminds moviegoers in a fun and engaging way not to disrupt the experience for those around them while they enjoy the show,” he said.

But now Erivo is giving fans permission to say it Evil Lyrics out loud.
