The Lions announce roster changes before the Thanksgiving game

Ahead of Thursday’s Thanksgiving game at Ford Field, the Detroit Lions announced several roster changes, including a notable absence from their lineup.

Wide receiver Kalif Raymond was placed on the reserve/injured list (IR) and is therefore out for the time being. To fill that void – and address other needs – the Lions signed wide receiver Maurice Alexander and linebacker David Long Jr. from the practice squad to the active roster.

Additionally, offensive lineman Jamarco Jones was elevated from the practice squad to the active/inactive squad.

Raymond’s move to IR isn’t a shock. Earlier this week, Lions head coach Dan Campbell admitted Raymond would miss some time but expressed optimism about his return later in the season.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Campbell said the team waited for a second opinion before making a decision on Raymond’s status. The receiver suffered a foot injury during the Lions’ 24-6 win over the Indianapolis Colts last Sunday.

The team reportedly remains optimistic that Raymond could return to the lineup before the postseason.

Meanwhile, Alexander, who has experience as a return specialist, could take on a larger role on special teams during Thursday’s game. In four games of the 2022 season, Alexander returned six shots for 146 yards, including one 47 yards. Since then, he has been a mainstay on the Lions’ practice squad.

Long Jr.’s promotion to the active roster also falls in line with recent changes. The Lions signed him to their practice squad on November 18 following his release from the Miami Dolphins.

With six seasons under his belt, Long brings valuable experience to Detroit’s defense. He started 49 of 75 games in his career and had an outstanding season with Miami in 2022, starting all 17 games and recording 113 tackles, a sack, a fumble recovery and a pass deflection.

Long’s addition gives the Lions additional depth at linebacker after starter Alex Anzalone broke his forearm in a Week 11 win against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Meanwhile, Jones’ emergence bolsters the offensive line as the Lions battle injuries. Left tackle Taylor Decker is out for Thursday’s game with a knee injury, making Jones’ presence crucial for added depth.
