Black Friday is in full swing for many local retailers | News

With Black Friday this week and many online sales already underway, local retailers are considering how to compete with major national chains and online sites.

HONOLULU (Island News) – Black Friday sales of up to 60% are already underway for some local retailers, trying to grab as much of your money as possible before you’ve even digested your Thanksgiving meals.

“Everyone is also shopping a little earlier this week because the time leading up to Thanksgiving and Christmas is a week shorter,” said Tina Yamaki, director of Retail Merchants of Hawaii.

And as many struggle with inflation, “they’re looking for the best value.” Even as Thanksgiving approaches, we’re seeing prices rise not just for groceries, but also for gas. We’ve seen it happen with clothing, electronics and everything we buy, so people are very cautious about that.”

To keep up with major national chains and online retailers, local stores like T&C Surf Designs are offering the most discounts in decades.

“Times have been challenging for many people, so we want everyone to be able to afford and enjoy their Christmas this year,” said Roseann Vierra, branch manager at T&C at Ala Moana Center.

Despite early sales, retailers are hoping to catch the rush on Black Friday proper.

“It’s still exciting to go out on Black Friday and experience the hustle and bustle of the season,” Vierra said.
