UFC Tampa fighter falls unconscious and falls into guillotine chokehold

Joel Alvarez maintained his 100 percent finish rate against Drakkar Klose, ending the fight at UFC on ESPN 63 with a bizarre sequence.

After shocking Klose (15-3-1 MMA, 9-3 UFC) with a punch in the opening round of the lightweight bout at Amalie Arena, Alvarez (22-3 MMA, 7-2 UFC) charged forward with a flying knee landed cleanly. With his opponent virtually unconscious, Alvarez grabbed him by the neck and attempted to throw him to the guillotine as Klose began to fall back.

Fortunately, the referee quickly realized that Klose was injured in the knee and pulled Alvarez for a knockout at 2:48 minutes of the first round.

With the win, Alvarez maintains his incredible run, stopping every opponent within the distance. He told MMA Junkie ahead of UFC on ESPN 63 that he was thinking about moving up to welterweight and that he intends to continue doing so – with one exception.

“We talked about maybe going up to 170,” Alvarez said through an interpreter in his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping. “Unless we have UFC Spain. Then I’ll stick with lightweight.”
