Despite a strong second-half performance from quarterback Caleb Williams, the Chicago Bears lost their sixth straight game on Thursday, falling 23-20 to the NFC North rival Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day at Ford Field in Detroit.

Shockingly, after a sack pushed the Bears to the edge of field goal range with about 30 seconds left in the game, the Bears didn’t use their timeout and the game ended unfinished for a long time.

Williams threw three touchdown passes in the second half and, in defeat, set a new rookie single-season record by completing 212 consecutive pass attempts without an interception, surpassing Kyler Murray’s previous record of 211:

Williams helped in a second-half comeback attempt by throwing two touchdown passes to veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen and adding a third score to DJ Moore after trailing 16-0 going into halftime, but it wasn’t enough to defeat a Lions team that improved to an NFL-best 11-1.

A slow start ultimately doomed the Bears, as they had just 53 yards of total offense and 7:06 of possession in the first half.

Football fans and analysts mocked the Bears for their poor first half and the unimaginable way Thursday’s game ended after they fell to 4-8 on the year with a sixth straight loss:

Dave Portnoy @Stool president

The Bears man. What the hell were they doing? I feel sorry for all my Chicago friends. Nobody deserves to support a team like that. Unreal

If the Lions hadn’t been able to capitalize on their red zone efforts in the first half, they might have been able to put the Bears away in the first half.

Instead, they had to settle for three field goals, lost a fumble in the red zone, and their only touchdown in the first 30 minutes was a three-yard pass from quarterback Jared Goff to tight end Sam Laporta:

The Bears showed signs of life on the first drive of the second half when Williams hit Allen for a 31-yard touchdown to give them their first points of the day:

However, the Lions responded on the next drive with LaPorta’s second touchdown catch of the day from one yard out:

A third consecutive touchdown drive of the half was then led by Williams, who hit Allen from nine yards out, although the Bears missed the two-point conversion, leaving them trailing by two points:

Williams brought the Bears even closer with 5:36 left in regulation by throwing his third touchdown pass of the day on a 31-yard toss to Moore:

Chicago forced a three-pointer from Detroit on the next drive and had a chance to potentially tie the game or take the lead, but the game ended with Chicago’s terrible clock management, putting Matt Eberflus’ future as head coach even more in question.

Although the Bears have underperformed in terms of record this season, Williams has shown flashes in recent weeks, having another strong performance with 256 passing yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions on 20 of 39 passes, plus 39 rushing yards.

Even though a playoff berth this season is now unlikely, the Bears may be able to rest assured that they have their franchise quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 draft.

As for the Lions, they still have a lot of cleaning to do before hosting the NFC North rival Green Bay Packers next Thursday, but their offense put in a great performance as usual on Turkey Day.

Goff threw for 221 yards, two touchdowns and no picks, while running back duo Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery combined for 175 rushing yards.

Intimidating Chicago in Detroit could prove to be the best thing for the Lions, as it will force them to refocus ahead of a game against Green Bay that could have massive implications for winning the division.

In the meantime, the Bears will look to get back on track in their next game on December 8th when they take on the struggling San Francisco 49ers.
