Scotts Valley Tornado: Multiple people injured, “significant” property damage reported after EF1 twister

SCOTS VALLEY, Calif. (KGO) — Security camera footage from Bruno’s Bar and Grill in Scotts Valley shows a fast-approaching tornado heading directly toward the restaurant.

“It started like that from the beginning and started to develop like that. So it was pretty crazy,” said Jazmyn Doubek, who works at Bruno’s Bar and Grill.

Initially there was concern that the tornado would hit the restaurant.

“But then it started to go away, so we were all fine,” she said.

Like many others, Doubek said, she never expected a tornado to rip through Scotts Valley — nor the aftermath it left behind.

“Yeah, I didn’t expect it to cause so much damage. A car in particular rolls over because cars are quite heavy. So it was like, Wow!” Doubeck said.

A video shared with ABC7 News showed very strong winds and flying debris as a car drove down Mt. Hermon Road.

The National Weather Service is reporting a possible tornado in Santa Cruz County Saturday afternoon.

This video showed the twister in a shopping center parking lot in Scotts Valley.

Pretty scary view of a possible tornado touching down in Scotts Valley, California on Saturday afternoon from a shopping center parking lot.

The National Weather Service confirmed it was a tornado that touched down Saturday around 1:30 p.m. A preliminary report released Saturday evening classified the tornado as an EF1.

“I have been a law enforcement officer in Santa Cruz County for almost 28 years and this is the first time I have experienced a tornado impact in our area. “It was obviously shocking,” said Scotts Valley Police Capt. Scott Garner.

Garner said the damage was extensive. About six cars overturned. Debris was thrown around, causing significant damage to businesses and cars parked in the tornado’s path. PG&E power lines and poles were demolished. A huge tree was torn from its roots and landed on part of the middle school.

Garner said police and firefighters had to help evacuate people trapped by downed power lines in parking lots. He said a total of five people were injured, but none with life-threatening injuries.

“Their main concern was getting people out of there, making sure the power lines were safe, the power was shut off and vehicles that were turned over weren’t spewing fuel,” Garner said.

Because the power was out, cars took detours through darkened shopping parking lots. Restaurants like Burger King and Taco Bell were closed. But when the tornado hit, everyone rushed to safety.

“The first thing we tried to do was lure the customers in, just in case it got worse,” said Elizabet Bocanegra, who works at Taco Bell. “Then the doors started opening and closing, opening and closing. So we grabbed them to close them. Then we saw the tornado come down and then it ended – in the blink of an eye.”

The tornado occurred hours after the National Weather Service issued an unprecedented tornado warning for San Francisco on Saturday morning, but it was lifted after the rotational winds that caused the warning passed the city.

Mount Herman Road, one of the main roads through Scotts Valley, also sustained extensive damage. Authorities say it will remain closed throughout the night to allow crews to continue cleanup.
