Jaime Munguia vs. Bruno Surace Results: Surace surprises Munguia with a one-punch knockout triumph

Jaime Munguia’s homecoming turned into a disaster as he was knocked out in six rounds by unheralded Frenchman Bruno Surace in Tijuana on Saturday. The official time was 2:36.

Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOs) was overwhelmed by an explosive left hook in round two and found himself well behind in the standings. However, the old cliché says that boxing only takes one punch, and Surace found just that, sending Munguia to the canvas with an overhand straight to the chin in the sixth.

No interviews were conducted after the fight, probably because no one expected Surace to win and no translator was available. This was almost undoubtedly the surprise of the year.

It was a tentative opening round, with both men fighting behind their jab and using their feet. As expected, Munguia was the one to advance while Surace moved from side to side around the ring.

The visitor was busy in the second round when he was hit by a fearsome left hook from Munguia. Surace was seriously injured and came to his senses during the count, but it was a rude awakening at the world level and his situation looked threatening.

After the knockdown, Munguia began to layer his offense. He aimed for the liver with a powerful left hook and also used his right hand well to the head as Surace continued to adjust. The Frenchman landed a nice combination at the end of the third round, but it was annoying.

Surace did score a nice uppercut to the left in the fifth round, but was completely offset by an uppercut to the right moments later. This pattern was constant. Munguia landed flush and the shots had an impact, whereas the guest’s punches bounced off the target and did no damage.

And then it happened. As he came off the ropes, Surace moved to the right, creating the space needed for the shot of his life. Munguia didn’t know what hit him as mouths fell open all around the ring.

In May, Munguia was dropped and outclassed by unified super middleweight king Canelo Alvarez. Undeterred, the 28-year-old boxer-puncher got back on the horse and scored an impressive 10th-round TKO over previously undefeated Erik Bazinyan in September.

There was talk of big showdowns against players like former world champion Caleb Plant in 2025, but all that has vanished into thin air. The only fight that makes sense for Munguia now is against the only man who handed him a stoppage loss. He falls to 44-2 (35 KOs)
