‘Cut this idiot’… Fans troll Colby Covington over hilarious details from walkout before loss to UFC Tampa

Viewers are mocking Colby Covington over a detail many missed about his strike in the UFC Tampa main event.

The former interim welterweight world champion arrived at short notice to face Joaquin Buckley in his adopted hometown on Saturday evening. But he didn’t make it any further and eventually had to be stopped after sustaining a terrible cut on his eye.

That evening, he completed an epic ring walk flanked by legendary WWE wrestler Hulk Hogan and UFC Hall of Famer Chael Sonnen. However, fans noticed a small flaw in his plan that affected the presentation of his strike.

Colby Covington was eliminated due to a fight between Joaquin Buckley and Hulk Hogan

While preparing for his short-notice UFC return, Colby Covington had teased that he would be bringing a special guest along for his ring visit. As a close friend of the Trump family, some suspected that President-elect Donald Trump would accompany him on the way to the cage.

However, it would be nearly impossible to secretly smuggle the US President-elect into a venue, and he ended up doing the walk with WWE icon Hulk Hogan. The couple is controversial both in the public eye and in public because of their various comments and in reality seemed to be a relatively solid couple.

Covington even walked out to Hulk Hogan’s famous theme song “Real American” and was roundly booed by the Tampa crowd. Meanwhile, the wrestling star held up an American flag as he made his way to the octagon.

Fans mock Colby Covington for strikeout mistake

Unfortunately for Covington, the bad news started before the fight when fans noticed he took a key step during his walk to perform a stunt. It is customary for athletes to wear combat gear in the octagon before removing their top and being checked by officials.

However, Covington decided to imitate Hulk Hogan and rip his shirt off in dramatic fashion. However, in order to do this effectively, he had to make slight cuts in the fabric of his outfit, which was obvious to those who watched closely.

Fans quickly took to social media to troll Covington for doing something so stupid and theoretically incapable of ripping his shirt open. Misfits Boxing commentator Ben Davis first noticed it, writing to his followers: “Colby cut his shirt open before tearing it in half. Please cut this idiot off.”

Strawweight contender Diana Belbita also noted the hilarious faux pas, adding, “Colby had already cut his shirt before he ripped it.” When a fan replied, “Well, UFC fight gear would be pretty hard to just rip,” she noted, that Ian Machado Garry’s actual fight shorts ripped just last week.

The fight didn’t go that way for Covington either, as doctors stepped in and canceled the fight after he sustained a terrible cut early on that continued to get worse. It looked like a punch had caught him on the way to a takedown attempt and opened his eye socket, which worried doctors between visits.

The cut didn’t have too much of an impact on matters, however, as Buckley largely dominated from the opening bell. He seemed to find his striking range early and was landing big punches at will, while also avoiding the threat of a takedown and landing a knockdown right at the end of the first.

Covington managed to take him down in the second round, but not for long, and the fight quickly got back to its feet. By the third moment it was clear which direction the fight was going, and the doctors didn’t even think about allowing Covington to continue. It is his second defeat in a row.
