The Texas Democrat says he can find “common ground” with Trump’s new border czar

Texas Democratic Congressman Henry Cuellar is already preparing to work with new border czar Tom Homan to improve border security.

Cuellar, whose district borders Mexico, argued for cooperation with Homan as his fellow Democrats prepared to openly oppose his support for mass deportations. Although Cuellar said he would like to see more details on border policy, he stressed that much can be done right now.

“We can deport people quickly under Title A, we can ‘remain in Mexico,’ we can do so many things in terms of policies that can work immediately,” Cuellar said Tuesday. “In fact, I spoke to Tom today and we talked about meeting up sometime when I get back to DC in the next week or so, and I think we can find a lot of common ground.”

Cuellar added that he reached out to Homan himself, who was also open to discussion.

The New York Democrat is calling on the party to end “dangerous” sanctuary policies and says officials could face criminal charges

“That tells me that Tom knows what has to work and I can pass on my experience to him. It’s interesting that Tom and I talk to each other. “We may not agree on everything, but we can definitely agree on quickly deporting the criminals, the national security people, the 1.3 million permanently deported people who have a final deportation order and are still here,” he said. “Some of the youngest flankers are some of the guys we need to look out for. So I think there’s a lot we can do, and Mexico has certainly done a lot, but they can still do much, much, much more stopping fentanyl and preventing people from coming in.”

Cuellar encouraged his fellow Democrats to talk to Homan at the border, emphasizing that there are things both parties can agree on when it comes to border security.

“I told some Democrats that we can agree on deporting criminals, right? Some of them hesitated.

He also believed that President-elect Trump’s threat of tariffs against Mexico would ultimately motivate the country to help negotiate at the border.

“Well, let me put it this way: Laredo is the largest port; we handle 40% of all trade between the US and Mexico. I know this is a way to negotiate and gain some influence. “I know Mexico will come to that table,” he replied.

“But no one wants a 25 percent tariff on them, and the Mexicans are threatening to do the same, and we don’t want to get involved in that,” Cuellar said. “But I think this will definitely bring Mexico to the table so we can solve the problem of immigration and fentanyl.”

Cuellar has been a frequent critic of the Biden administration and the Democratic Party for ignoring and sometimes exacerbating the border crisis and turning away the migrants overwhelming border cities.
