Winter weather advisory issued for Western Nevada

Update: Rescuers responded to a reported two-vehicle collision halfway up the Carson Valley side of Kingsbury Grade around 7:10 a.m. Saturday.

There are no reports of injuries, but conditions on the highway are slippery.

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a winter weather advisory for much of Western Nevada until 4 p.m. today.

Snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches above 5,000 feet and up to 1 inch below 5,000 feet.

There was a branch down at Sheridan and Bollen.

From 3 a.m. Saturday, chain controls will be in effect on all highways that run through the Sierra Nevada.

NVRoads.com shows snow on Highway 50 near Cave Rock, not far above Lake Tahoe. Only in South Lake Tahoe itself are neither chains nor four-wheel drive with winter tires required on the routes around Lake Tahoe.

On Friday evening, the Alpine County Sheriff’s Office closed roads in the Bear Valley subdivision due to heavy snow and hazardous conditions. Roads will remain closed until conditions improve and residents are advised to immediately remove their vehicles from subdivision roads, according to county spokesman JT Chevallier.

Access through the city’s commercial area will be limited to a one-way street.

During the night there was much more wind than precipitation. Fredericksburg resident Jeff Garvin reported a wind gust of 52 mph and 0.08 inches of humidity around 12:30 p.m.

Garvin was plagued by stronger wind gusts, with Sheridan reporting 68 mph for the highest gust in the Carson Valley and Emigrant Trail and Highway 88 in Alpine County both reaching 67 mph as of 1 a.m

Chain checks over Spooner Summit lasted about an hour as a winter storm hit the Lake Tahoe area. As of 4:30 p.m., nvroads.com reported no roadside checks in the Douglas section of Lake Tahoe.

Chain controls are in effect on Highway 50 above Spooner Summit as a storm rolls into the Carson Range between Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe.

According to the National Weather Service, a winter storm warning is in effect for the Greater Lake Tahoe region until 10 p.m. Saturday.

Meteorologists are predicting 4 to 10 inches of heavy wet snowfall, twice as much above 6,500 feet, with gusts of 130 mph across the mountain ranges and 2- to 4-foot waves on Lake Tahoe.

Chain controls on 50 will end south of Glenbrook as of 2:45 p.m., but weather service radar shows a front rolling north to south.

Drivers should check road conditions before driving to work in the evening.
