76ers rookie Jared McCain has a torn meniscus and will need surgery

The 76ers received devastating news this weekend.

Jared McCain, the front-runner for NBA Rookie of the Year, reported soreness in his left knee after Friday night’s 121-107 loss to the Indiana Pacers.

An MRI on Saturday revealed a tear to the lateral meniscus in his left knee. The injury requires surgery and the guard is out indefinitely.

This news comes after McCain, the No. 16 pick in the first round of the NBA draft out of Duke, appeared to suffer a head injury in the third quarter after falling to the court during a foul. McCain hit the back of his head on that play.

He struggled to keep his balance and had to be stopped by Paul George go to the foul line.

McCain was examined in the locker room and given the concussion protocol. He returned to play later in the quarter.

News of his injury came a day after Joel Embiid suffered a fractured sinus against the Pacers.

The Sixers will miss McCain, who averaged 15.3 points, made 2.2 three-pointers per game and shot 38.2% from distance. The 20-year-old joined NBA Hall of Famer Allen Iverson as the only Sixers rookies to average at least 15 points and two three-pointers per game.

McCain was named Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month in October and November.

During those months, he led all rookies with seven games in which he scored at least 20 points, including two games with 30 or more points. This was highlighted by his career-high 34 against the Cleveland Cavaliers on November 13th. McCain finished the game with 10 assists, joining Iverson and Ben Simmons as the only Sixers rookies with at least 30 points and 10 assists in a game.
