California tornado categorized as EF1; Damaged area reopened

According to the National Weather Service, a tornado hit Scotts Valley around 1:40 p.m. Saturday. Several people were injured in the tornado. The NWS stated that a preliminary damage survey determined the tornado was rated a 1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. Most of the damage occurred along Mount Hermon Road. “The tornado caused significant damage in several areas, including the overturning of several vehicles in and around the Mt. Hermon Drive shopping district,” said a media release from the Scotts Valley Police Department. In total, five people were injured and four of them were taken out of the hospital. One person remains hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries following a lung puncture. CAL FIRE told KSBW that a battalion chief was caught in the “weather event” and his vehicle was picked up. “Out of an abundance of caution, he was taken to the hospital, but he is doing well.” According to police, PG&E poles, trees, businesses and several cars were damaged by flying debris and six cars overturned. Additionally, the Target sign and the McDonald’s sign were vandalized. There is no current dollar estimate for the damage. The event took place on Mount Hermon Road near Target. Scotts Valley Police closed the road in all directions between Scotts Valley Drive and Lockewood Drive. The road has been reopened since Sunday morning.
