Commanders’ Zach Ertz suffers a concussion against Saints

NEW ORLEANS – Washington Commanders tight end Zach Ertz was sidelined after suffering a concussion following a one-handed grab in the red zone in the second quarter against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

Ertz made the catch at the 10-yard line, but hit his head on the ground during a tackle at the 3. After being helped to the sideline, Ertz was evaluated for a concussion and later ruled out.

Ertz is Washington’s second-leading pass catcher with 54 receptions and four touchdowns. Washington also has John Bates on its tight end depth chart, who is more of a run blocker, and rookie Ben Sinnott. These two combined for 10 catches.

Ertz’s grab on third-and-3 set up Washington’s second touchdown of the game, giving Washington a 14-0 halftime lead over the Saints.

Washington’s offense was already missing starting center Tyler Biadasz, who was inactive due to an illness, and receiver Noah Brown, who was placed on injured reserve on Saturday after suffering a kidney injury.
