Is “Yellowstone” over? What you should know about a possible sixth season

“Yellowstone” is nearing the end of its fifth season. The finale is scheduled for December 15th at 8pm ET on Paramount Network. But is the series End?

The western drama was expected to come to an end after the fifth season concluded, but now fans are confused because the series didn’t market itself as an ending.

So is “Yellowstone” coming to an end? We know that.

Will there be a “Yellowstone” season 6?

It’s a simple question with a not-so-simple answer.

In May 2023, Paramount Network announced that the fifth season of “Yellowstone” would be its last. This comes after reports of scheduling issues and disputes between Kevin Costner and series creator Taylor Sheridan. Kevin Costner announced in June 2024 that he would not be returning for Season 5, Part 2.

During an interview with The New York Times in November 2024, Kelly Reilly, who plays Beth in Yellowstone, confirmed that an ending had been filmed for the finale.

“We’re definitely ending this show,” she said.

However, there were recent reports that she and her co-star Cole Hauser, who plays Rip, could continue the “Yellowstone” story for a sixth season.

When asked about the rumors in a November 2024 piece for The Hollywood Reporter that appeared about a week after the New York Times article, both Reilly and Hauser said that continuing the saga would be up to Sheridan.

“Taylor can figure out how to move forward absolutely if he wants to,” Hauser told the outlet. “But that’s simply because Taylor is a brilliant writer. I’m not telling you it’s going to continue, it’s just that he’s smart enough as a writer to do that if that’s something he’s passionate about.”

“It’s up to him,” Reilly said of Sheridan in the same interview.

“We trust him. He’s a master storyteller and we help him tell the stories of these characters and it’s been such a journey and it’s been so electrifying to play and so invigorating,” she continued. “I trust him. I trust him wherever he takes them; whether we leave them where we left them or whether we find them somewhere else, I trust him. I could really go either way right now.”

However, Reilly said that the “dealbreaker” for her was that the script had to come from Sheridan.

Why do people think “Yellowstone” will continue?

After a teaser for the final episode of season five was shared on Yellowstone’s social media accounts, people noticed that the clip said “season finale” at the end – not “series finale.”

Fans are speculating that there’s more “Yellowstone” on the horizon, with X serving as a focal point for their hopes that the series doesn’t actually end.

“Special season finale? It’s supposed to be the series finale. See you next episode,” one person wrote.

“Can’t wait to see how #Yellowstone comes to a conclusion this week. “I hope that by the end of the finale we will find out if there is a chance for a sixth season or another spin-off with members of the Dutton family,” another person wrote.

“So the final episode is the SEASON FINALE, not the SERIES FINALE. Very interesting as this is the final season of #Yellowstone. Taylor Sheridan I swear you better write a good finale,” another commented.

“Yellowstone” has spin-offs, and more may be on the way

If Yellowstone does indeed come to an end, fans can rejoice in the fact that there are spin-offs, and the show’s universe may expand even further.

The prequel series “1883” and “1923” each had one season. Another spinoff, “The Madison,” starring Michelle Pfeiffer, is expected to premiere in 2025. “6666” and another prequel series, “1944,” are rumored to be in the works, while another spin-off centering on “Yellowstone” characters Beth and Rip is also reportedly being discussed.
