Steelers’ Mike Tomlin praises Eagles’ Saquon Barkley before Sunday’s game

The Eagles hope to extend their nine-game winning streak when they host the Pittsburgh Steelers and resurgent quarterback Russell Wilson on Sunday (4:25 p.m., Fox29). The Birds (11-2) are coming off a three-game winning streak over the Carolina Panthers, 22-16, which had fans worried about their passing game.

The Steelers (10-3) are coming off a 27-14 victory over the Cleveland Browns. After winning seven of its last eight games, Pittsburgh sits atop the AFC North and has a two-game lead over the Baltimore Ravens. The Steelers intercepted Cleveland quarterback Jameis Winston twice and sacked him three times.

Meanwhile, the Eagles struggled with their win over Carolina and secured a playoff spot for the fourth straight year. The Birds entered the game as 12-point favorites last Sunday, but the passing game was difficult as Jalen Hurts completed 14 of 21 passes for just 108 yards.

The Steelers will turn their attention to Eagles running back Saquon Barkley. This is what the Steelers say about their game in Philadelphia:

Slow down Barkley

Barkley was a bright spot in the Eagles’ win on Sunday. He finished the game with 124 yards on 20 carries, his fourth straight game with over 100 rushing yards. He also set the team’s single-season rushing record with 1,623, surpassing LeSean McCoy’s 2013 mark (1,607).

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin believes their chances of winning on Sunday depend on whether they can stop Barkley.

“The acquisition of Saquon Barkley has to be the most significant acquisition in the NFL in 2024,” Tomlin told reporters. “This is what the tape looks like. He was dominant. Obviously it’s eye-opening at times. Highlight roll-caliber plays, long runs, touchdowns, etc. For us it starts here. If you don’t minimize it in some way, you won’t even have a chance of success.

“Obviously he attracted a lot of attention earlier in the week. But he can’t get all the attention. I remember the last time we were in a stadium with him, I think it was 2020, and he was playing for the Giants and Daniel Jones was a very young quarterback at the time. We were able to focus a lot of energy on him. We can’t do that this time.”

The Steelers last played against Barkley on September 14, 2020 at MetLife Stadium. The Steelers defeated the Giants 26-16, holding Barkley to 6 yards on 15 carries and 60 yards on six receptions.

“Bring the fight to them”

Barkley is on pace to break the NFL rushing record of 2,105 yards set by Eric Dickerson in 1984. Steelers linebacker Patrick Queen praised Barkley in pursuit of the record.

“This is huge,” Queen said. “It’s been a while since that’s been up there. The fact that he can find a new team and reach this part of his career is something that you don’t see at all. That’s hats off to the team he plays on, his offensive coordinator, his line and to him. The boys are doing a good job so we have to go out there, play physical football and stop it.”

When asked how the Steelers plan to stop Barkley, Queen replied: “Everyone has to do their job.

“I think some teams don’t realize how good Saquon is. I think that’s what you have to focus on, especially playing against a guy like that, a team like that with everything they’ve got. A good O-line, good running backs, good receivers. Everyone just has to do their job. … You never know what you’re going to get (Barkley). So that’s what I mean by being physical. You just have to take the fight to them.”
