Taylor Swift’s birthday gift to fans: behind-the-scenes videos

If you know it, you know it. Taylor Swift didn’t post anything to her social media accounts on Friday, December 13, her 35th birthday. But her official online team, known as Taylor Nation, used its social media accounts to alert fans to a new section on Swift’s website dedicated to archiving material from different eras.

Fans can navigate the TS Eras archive by clicking on an image of Swift from the era they want to explore in the photo banner. There, you can discover behind-the-scenes clips from the music video shoot for “Anti-Hero,” “Karma,” “Fortnight” and more, all newly uploaded to YouTube since December 13th. The BTS videos can also be found by going directly to Swift’s YouTube page and sorting the videos by “Newest”.

“I was the architect of my own chaos that I currently live in,” a silver statue version of Swift, seen in the video above, quips in the “Karma” clip. “I have no idea how many hundred showers it will take to get rid of this.”

A recurring theme in these clips is that Swift’s practical work, personality and style as a director are highlighted. Not only was she the obvious star of all the music videos here, but she also directed them. Swift counts 10 directing credits – 9 music videos and a short film (All Too Well: The Short Film) – for previously released projects, with a plan to move to features. In December 2022, it was announced that Swift would make her debut as a feature film director with Searchlight Pictures. The as-yet-untitled film is based on a screenplay written by Swift.

Many (if not all?) of the behind-the-scenes videos from Friday’s drop were played at Eras Tour stadiums before Swift took the stage for her 3.5-hour concert. The volume and excitement there made it difficult to pay close attention to all the little details in the clips, but now they can be watched anytime and as many times as you like from the comfort of your own home. Even more fun: The video progress bar features a symbol of Swift’s signature heart hands.

On December 13, Taylor Nation also shared a link to a new Apple Music playlist from Swift, “Winter Warmers,” featuring curated songs from her own catalog mixed with selections from Era’s opening acts.

Swift’s massive Eras Tour wrapped up in Vancouver on December 8, just before she was named the big winner of the 2024 Billboard Music Awards on December 12 – with ten new wins making her the most awarded artist in the show’s history. “This is the best early birthday present you could have given me,” she said in her acceptance speech video, noting that her fans’ support for the music was the reason for her honor.
