Saquon Barkley injury update: Eagles MVP candidate RB leaves game against Steelers after suffering major blow

The Eagles have gotten MVP-like performances from Saquon Barkley this season, but there was cause for concern for Philadelphia’s star running back on Sunday.

Barkley left the Eagles’ Week 15 matchup against the Steelers with an apparent injury, forcing backup Kenneth Gainwell into the role of the team’s top running back.

Barkley did not return to the field in the first half, raising doubts about his status for the remainder of the game. He was used again in the third quarter.

Here’s the latest on Barkley’s injury and why he briefly left the Week 15 game against Pittsburgh.

Saquon Barkley injury updates vs. Steelers

Barkley wasn’t one of the standout players in Philadelphia’s first-half win over Pittsburgh, as Jalen Hurts’ connection with top receivers AJ Brown and Devonta Smith was the focus of the game.

However, Barkley stayed in the game until the second quarter. He got the ball for a 3-yard gain early in the frame after blocking a big hit from Minkah Fitzpatrick. Soon after, Philadelphia subbed for Gainwell.

Barkley was seen entering the blue medical tent, and the Eagles ended the drive with a touchdown from Hurts to Smith. The running back appeared ready to return to action on his team’s next drive, but the team stuck with Gainwell.

Barkley was seen running and stretching on the sidelines after the injury, but did not return in the first half.

But after halftime, Philadelphia had its star back on the field, seemingly healthy and ready to address the issue.
