Lions vs. Bills: Live score updates, highlights, injury news

The Week 15 game will take place in Detroit, Michigan (with all due respect to Steelers vs. Eagles).

The 12-1 Detroit Lions host the 10-3 Buffalo Bills in an NFC/AFC matchup that many are calling a potential Super Bowl preview. The Lions are on an 11-game winning streak but can’t afford to slip up with the Eagles and Vikings – both 11-2 – hot on their heels for the lead in the NFC.

The Bills are coming off a shootout loss to the Los Angeles Rams. They have a little less to play for since they’ve already won the AFC East, and it’s not likely they’ll catch the soon-to-be 13-1 Kansas City Chiefs. Instead, they’re just competing with the Steelers (10-3) and Texans (8-5) for a spot between 2 and 4 in the AFC.

Still, this is a litmus test for every team. Can they compete with the best teams in the other conference? Can the Lions’ defense – now at least a little healthier – slow down MVP candidate Josh Allen enough for their offense to win the game? After a terrible performance against the Rams — and without three starters in the secondary — can the Bills defense bounce back?

The answers all come at 4:25 p.m. ET when the Lions and Bills kick off on CBS. We’re live from Ford Field providing drive-by-drive analysis, score updates, highlights and injury news as it arrives. Just stay here on this page and click the refresh button when the game starts.

First quarter

The Bills won the toss and retreated, giving the Lions’ offense its first opportunity to take the field. After two incomplete passes and a run for no gain, Detroit quickly took the lead.

The Bills got on the field first with an impressive drive from Josh Allen. He immediately entered Lions territory with a well-placed ball to Ty Johnson on a wheel route over Kwon Alexander for 33 yards.

Then, on third-and-5, Allen threw another ball to Johnson after trying to buy himself time for another 25 yards.

Two plays later, the Bills were faced with the score and that 7-0 Bills lead.

The Lions were able to get a single first down on the next drive, but on the next series the Bills sent a cornerback blitz that wasn’t picked up and Jared Goff was sacked. The Lions couldn’t get out of the jam and Goff was sacked again on third down.

Allen picked up where he left off, fighting his way through the air, finding time and then connecting with James Cook for 28 yards. From then on, the Bills systematically worked their way down the field and capped it off with a 4-yard touchdown run from Allen. 14-0 Bills.

Jahmyr Gibbs gave the offense a little momentum on their third drive. He took a 13-yard screen and followed it up with a 9-yard run to midfield. Then the Lions pulled out their bag of tricks with a return throw from David Montgomery to Jared Goff, who found an open Amon-Ra St. Brown for 24 yards.

Second quarter

A 13-yard run by Gibbs put Detroit in the red zone. Then on third-and-9, Tim Patrick made a wonderful catch and then reached over the pylon for a 12-yard touchdown catch. 14-7 bills.

The Bills worked their way to midfield, where they found themselves on a four-and-2. Again, Allen found Ty Johnson on the wheel route over Ezekiel Turner for 31 yards.

Three plays later, James Cook got untouched into the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown. 21-7 bills.

Lions cornerback Carlton Davis was injured on the first play of that drive. He was deemed questionable to return with a jaw injury and was also being evaluated for a concussion. He was later demoted to retirement due to the jaw injury.

The Lions’ ensuing drive started promisingly with an 18-yard gain for Jameson Williams. They then converted a fourth down of their own after Goff hit St. Brown for a 21-yard gain. Goff then converted a third-and-10 by rushing for 11 yards. A few plays later, the Lions made another trick play, executing a play-action fake and throwing it to jumbo offensive lineman Dan Skipper for a 9-yard touchdown. 21-14 bills.

But Allen responded almost immediately. He escaped another sack attempt on the first play of the game and then fired a long shot to Keon Coleman for a 64-yard gain.

The Lions finally managed a defensive stop, but it came at a price. Cornerback Khalil Dorsey collided with his own players and injured his leg. The car came out immediately and Dorsey appeared to have been sent on an aircast. However, the Bills missed the chip-shot field goal, leaving the score 21-14 with 1:43 left in the half.

The Lions’ drive started with a 22-yard gain to Sam LaPorta. But the Lions remained on the Bills’ side and had to settle for a 52-yard field goal attempt that Jake Bates pushed left.

That left the Bills with 36 seconds left from their own 42-yard line to extend their lead. Alim McNeill forced an intentional grounding early in the drive, putting the Bills in trouble. Buffalo couldn’t fight out fast enough and the half ended with the Bills down 21-14.

Third quarter

Early in the second half, Allen went right back to his favorite target of the game – Ty Johnson – for a 19-yard gain. Then Buffalo hit Detroit right in the gut, setting up a 41-yard touchdown from Cook. 28-14 bills.

Similar to the first half, the Lions offense struggled early in the third quarter. After two unsuccessful runs, Goff was sacked in the third, forcing a three-and-out.

After a team special penalty, the Bills started inside their own 10-yard line. Allen was able to get a few first downs, burning out the clock and flipping field position, but Detroit would force Buffalo for the first punt of the game. THowever, Alim McNeill suffered an injury at the third stop and had to retire immediately.

Detroit would have its own chance on a 90-yard drive, starting at its own 4-yard line. Three direct passes to Montgomery gave them 25 yards. But on a deep shot over the middle, Amon-Ra St. Brown caught it and fumbled, and it was recovered by the Bills at the 41-yard line – plus a personal foul penalty for the Lions.

The Bills would cash in for one later 35-14 bills lead.

The Lions wouldn’t disappear entirely, however. Goff threw a pin into St. Brown’s face on a 66-yard touchdown pass to create the ball 35-21 bills There are only two minutes left in the third quarter.
