Three Guys, Three Duds: From the Patriots’ dazed defeat to the Cardinals

The New England Patriots came off their bye week looking unrefreshed after a 30-17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium.

New England fell to 3-11 while Arizona improved to 7-7 with the NFC West still up for grabs.

Here are two guys and two duds from the Patriots’ loss in Arizona.

SUPPORT
Drake Maye
The quarterback’s performance probably isn’t worthy of being a “stud,” but Maye did what he could with abysmal playcalling and a supporting cast of skilled position players who didn’t create separation.

Maye went 10 of 10 through the air in the first half, although the number of completions was less than 100 yards. The Patriots also attempted few passes more than 10 yards down the field, keeping Maye under wraps on his own.

He also recorded another interception on the stat sheet, although Kayshon Boutte was blamed for a blatant ball throw that sent the ball into the hands of Arizona defender Sean-Murphy Bunting.

Maye patiently got the Patriots into the end zone before throwing a touchdown pass to DeMario Douglas in the fourth quarter. With less than two minutes left, he added another score on the ground.

Christian González
Gonzalez received further praise in another highly anticipated matchup with talented rookie Marvin Harrison Jr. The Patriots cornerback made the plays of the day with two pass breakups in the end zone against the Cardinals rookie to limit the points on the board .

Gonzalez defended three passes on the afternoon and held Harrison Jr. to two catches.

Idiots
Vederian Lowe
Lowe’s difficult season continued Sunday in the desert. The left tackle started numerous plays on a first-half possession in New England territory where a sack was allowed, nearly a second behind.

Lowe also hit Maye on a play that prevented the quarterback from leaping forward for first-down yardage in the second quarter. Arizona’s defensive line dominated Lowe from the start.

Alex Van Pelt
New England’s offensive coordinator failed to challenge the opposing defense in any way. The Patriots only had 89 total yards in the first half. He failed to maximize Maye’s playmaking abilities and prevented the Patriots from finding a rhythm.

He also called back-to-back inside runs that New England failed to convert on third and fourth downs in the second half of the Patriots’ disappointing red zone effort.

Pass rush penalties
The Patriots gave Kyler Murray and the Cardinals two free first downs. Deatrich Wise Sr. brought down Murray in the first half, although he dragged him to the ground by the nameplate and earned a flag for a horsecollar tackle.

New England also returned the favor when Jonathan Jones intercepted a pass deep in Arizona territory in the third quarter. Instead, a penalty on Anfernee Jennings resulted in the passer being tackled roughly.
