Thousands pay their respects at New Bern cemeteries during the annual Wreaths Across America event

As part of the annual Wreaths Across America event, over 6,000 wreaths were placed on graves at New Bern National Cemetery and Cedar Grove Cemetery. Volunteers said this year’s turnout was the largest they had seen in years.

“It’s a small act that goes a long way toward keeping our veterans’ memories alive. We are here to remember not the deaths but their lives,” said a volunteer.

Cars lined the streets Saturday morning as participants gathered to honor thousands of fallen service members ahead of the holiday. Terry Snyder, a volunteer, said he was amazed at the growing turnout. “The first time I came three years ago was, you know, mediocre. This is incredible! It gets bigger and bigger every time, I love it!” he said.

Vietnam veteran Gary Gileete emphasized the importance of the event. “Honoring them and recognizing those sacrifices is something I really appreciate as a veteran and the entire veteran community,” he said.

Volunteers of all ages participated and took time to honor and remember those who sacrificed their lives for the country. A 91-year-old volunteer said: “It is so important to think about these people. It’s the most humbling experience I’ve ever had.”

Matthew Conard, another volunteer, emphasized the educational aspect for younger participants. “The children have a lot of fun. “It also helps in instilling proper stewardship of one’s country, showing patriotism and remembering those who have fallen and those who are serving today,” he said.

For those unable to lay a wreath, Wreaths Across America will make matching donations over the next month. For more information, visit kranzsacrossamerica.org.
