Marcus Freeman signs contract extension with Notre Dame

Notre Dame football has its head coach for the foreseeable future.

According to multiple ISD sources, we can confirm a report from Nicole Auerbach that Marcus Freeman has signed a multi-year extension keeping him at Notre Dame.

A source told ISD that it would be a four-year extension that would lock him in for six years, and that the deal would also make him one of the highest-paid coaches in the country. In addition to Freeman’s contract, Notre Dame expresses its commitment to bringing its employees’ salaries in line with the upper echelons of college football and having a state-of-the-art facility that includes Shield Family Hall, already under construction.

“I am grateful for the support of the Board of Trustees led by John Veihmeyer, President Fr. Bob Dowd, CSC, and Athletics Director Pete Bevacqua,” said Freeman. “The investment they continue to put into our program is invaluable.” This commitment from our student-athletes and staff goes far beyond myself as they are committed to ensuring that all aspects of our program remain in the upper echelon of college. Footballs are competitive.

Freeman, who is in his third season as head coach, has started his career 30-9, including an 11-4 mark against top-25 opponents.

The extension will also put to rest rumors surrounding Freeman, as his name has been linked to the Chicago Bears in recent weeks.

“With team fame and team success comes individual recognition and individual fame,” Freeman said last month. “I know, and hopefully everyone in this program understands, that if everyone in this program doesn’t do their job, we won’t accomplish what we want on the football field on Saturdays. If you do your job and everyone does their job and you succeed, every week or at certain times of the year there will be certain people who enjoy individual recognition and individual fame.

“I know, and we know, that it will take all of us to achieve the success we strive for. That to me is a reflection of the way this program plays and performs on a daily basis and on Saturdays.

Notre Dame hosts Indiana on Friday at 8 p.m. ET in the first-ever College Football Playoff game on a college campus.
