Tom Brady lashes out at Daniel Jones as the NFL legend delivers a scathing verdict on the Giants quarterback’s departure

Tom Brady has taken a swipe at Daniel Jones over his departure from the New York Giants after insisting he didn’t ask to be released by a team that “made a big commitment to you.”

Jones left the Giants last week after approaching owner John Mara and asking to be released from his $160 million contract, a request that was quickly accepted given his disappointing form.

The quarterback had lost his starting spot on Brian Daboll’s team just days before reaching this mutual agreement with Mara, which was the final nail in the coffin after a disappointing six-year stay in New York.

But despite his struggles with the Giants, where he went 2-8 this season before being demoted, Brady doesn’t approve of Jones asking for his release, nearly 18 months after he was handed a lucrative new contract.

“I don’t know how the whole situation unfolded, but to think that you would ask to be released from a team that was very committed to you is probably different than how I would have handled it,” said the seven-time Super Bowl winner said on Fox Sports commentary during the Giants’ Thanksgiving game against the Dallas Cowboys.

“I always felt like I wanted to gain the trust and respect of my teammates regardless of the situation because I knew I was trying to do my best for the team because that was the most important thing.”

Jones was removed as the Giants’ starting quarterback following a 20-17 loss to the Carolina Panthers in Germany earlier this month – the team’s fifth straight loss.

After his demotion, he was even assigned as a scout team safety for the defense during a practice before last weekend’s clash with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Brady added: “Different things just happen in the NFL and everyone makes individual decisions.”

“I think we all face different challenges at different times in our careers.” I faced them in college and some things didn’t go the way I wanted, but the people that mattered most to me were the guys in the changing room.

“I showed up every day. “I didn’t care if they asked me to be scout team safety (or scout team quarterback)… I wanted to do everything I could to help the team win.”

Interestingly, following his departure from the Giants, Jones is believed to have turned down the chance to join the Las Vegas Raiders – where Brady recently acquired a 10 percent minority stake.

ESPN also reports that he agreed to a one-year, $375,000 deal with the Minnesota Vikings instead.

Jones will begin his career on Minnesota’s practice squad, meaning the quarterback could still move to another team in the coming weeks if a starter suffers an injury elsewhere. He is still scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the 2024 season.

Earlier this week, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell refused to dwell on the possibility of Jones landing with the Vikings, but praised the former Duke star.

“I won’t really go into it today, but I would like to pay huge respect to Daniel Jones as a player and a person,” O’Connell said.

“I met him years ago through the draft process. Now that Daniel is a free agent and there is probably a lot of interest in him across the league, I am sure that Daniel will make the decision that is best for him and his future career.

O’Connell added: “I really can’t go into too much detail about the short term or long term aspects.” All I can say is that I’ve been a big fan of Daniel for a long time and hope it’s a good opportunity for him wherever he goes always his next step leads him.”
