What the Seahawks said – 2024 Week 15: Seahawks vs. Packers

MIKE MACDONALD: It was a great atmosphere. I just told the team that it really hurts, we had a great chance at home in front of the 12s and our fans did a great job, so we appreciate it. But it burns. I thought, in general, you have to give Green Bay a lot of credit. I thought they trained us better. We didn’t have a good enough plan in all three phases. I am responsible for this and, to be honest, I didn’t play well enough. We didn’t do the things that won us games. We didn’t do these things. If you want, we can check them out. I just told the team: Hey, good news is everything, all our goals are still ahead of us and we will get back to work tomorrow. So let’s watch the tape and attack with all our might, like we have done the rest of the season, and move forward and prepare for a good Vikings team to get here. Let’s go. There is a lot of football ahead of us. All of our goals are right there. We have to learn from it, whatever we do, and move on.

Mike, what do you know about Geno’s injury right now?

MIKE MACDONALD: It was a knee-jerk for Geno. I’ll tell you this: This guy is probably the toughest player I’ve ever been around. Was serious enough that he didn’t come back into the game. We’ll do all the tests tomorrow and find out as we go. At the moment it seems structurally fine. I have to get it photographed and all that stuff.

Was he even close to being able to come back?

MIKE MACDONALD: He wanted to. I think he was just about to come back, one of those drives, I think the one before we threw the pick, and then he just couldn’t go.

Do you expect him to miss even more time?

MIKE MACDONALD: I don’t know. We need to complete the testing and I know he will do everything humanly possible to go play, but I just don’t know at the moment.

Just to clarify, sprain or whatever or there’s just no…

MIKE MACDONALD: I don’t know.

Olu, what happened to him?

MIKE MACDONALD: Like a quad/knee combo. Again, I’m not sure about the severity. Hard enough that he won’t come back. We’ll find out the extent tomorrow, take the pictures and all that stuff.

He was struggling a bit before the injury –

Thrown his fourth end zone interception. What do you think was the reason for this in the game?

MIKE MACDONALD: Again, I didn’t talk to him about the piece. Once again, our entire team didn’t play well enough to win. So I’m a part of it; Geno is part of it. We have to learn from it and move on.

How much did the early game have an impact on how you were able to play the football, especially after last week’s game?

MIKE MACDONALD: We didn’t execute it effectively enough, and I think we still felt like we were able to largely stick to our plan. We knew this team would start very quickly. Defensively, we didn’t hold up our end of the bargain and stifled the start the way these guys were operating. We’ll look at the tape to see where we fell short and move on from there.

MIKE MACDONALD: All of the above. I mean, it’s just a microcosm for the rest of the game. There are some plays that we normally make that we didn’t make, and there are plays where they outran us and earned those yards. I can also name a better game, i.e. all of the above.

What was better in the second half?

MIKE MACDONALD: Our guys are going to fight. We fought – even if it came to an end and we only scored three points, at a certain point it’s not worth risking an injury. But our boys really fought until the touchdown throw in the 4th minute to make it 87, which is an amazing throw and catch. We had opportunities to get back into the game. I think we got to 10 points and had a couple possessions on offense to make it a one-score game and in the end we turned it on its head and gave up the touchdown and that was it. Our guys fought hard and the coaches fought hard on the sideline and made adjustments. Our guys are on top of figuring out how to attack us and trying to find solutions. Our boys will always fight until the end.

(Regarding how Sam played.)

MIKE MACDONALD: I mean, it wasn’t good enough to win. I know he’s disappointed. We just didn’t feel like we were getting the ball out in a timely manner, and then our pass protection didn’t complement it. I know we gave up a lot of sacks and they did a good job too. They covered the lanes and rushed the passer, and it was a complementary game for them.

Quite a difficult situation for him to be behind.

MIKE MACDONALD: Yes. That’s why we have Sam. That’s why we have Sam to help us win games when he needs it. But you see, the situation is difficult. He hasn’t played yet this year. We have faith in Sam. Guy is a great player. If he gets another chance, he will do a great job.

(Unrecognizable.) In what way was this plan better?

MIKE MACDONALD: You want to feel like you’re ahead of the game and we just didn’t start fast enough. So let’s look at why this is the case and think schematically about what we can do better. I have to put them in better positions; We need to have a better plan on offense and special teams. We know that. It just wasn’t good enough. Our job is to figure out why that is and fix it so we can move on.

JSN had another productive game. What do you attribute to his outburst?

MIKE MACDONALD: I wouldn’t call it an outbreak. I mean, this guy has been making plays since we walked in the door. There’s a reason we picked him in the first round last year. I can’t say anything about last year, but this guy is a real superstar. He just brings it every day. He’s the guy we thought he was. He plays great; do a great job.

Kenneth Walker hoping to come back next week?

MIKE MACDONALD: Yes, hope is a good word.

Do you have a better idea of how likely that is?

MIKE MACDONALD: I haven’t had any new information since Friday, so he just couldn’t come this week. I think we’re not looking for a long-term thing. Structurally it’s fine, structurally everything is fine.
