Here’s Matt Eberflus’ explanation for his irredeemable clock management in Week 13

As someone who loves things coming full circle, I appreciate Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus starting and ending this week of football with stunning explanations of incredibly terrible coaching decisions.

BEAR-LION ANALYSIS: Week 13 Grades | Post-game summary

Here’s what the Bears head coach had to say about what happened when his team ran out of time despite having a timeout it could take advantage of in the final moments of a 23-20 loss to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving.

“I like what we did there. Again, once it’s under seven, you’re going to call a timeout there, actually under 12, and then you don’t really have a choice because it’s third to fourth and then you have to throw it into the end zone. So I think we handled it correctly. I think so if we just restart the play, put it in play, take a timeout and that’s the reason we held it. It didn’t work out the way we wanted.”

The Chicago Bears have never fired a head coach during a season. But after a loss like the one against the Lions, which extended the team’s losing streak to six games, I think it’s fair to wonder whether the winds of change will blow in Chicago. Or, better yet, when the winds of change blow Matt Eberflus out of town. With this loss, the Bears are now 5-19 in games decided by one point since 2022, when the EBerflus era began. As you might expect, this is the worst record in the NFL during that span.

EARLIER: Another mindless statement from the Bears head coach

Ultimately, I can’t help but feel that the explanation Matt Eberflus gave goes a long way toward explaining how he has a 14-32 record and a .304 winning percentage in his three-year career as the Bears’ head coach .
