The Pixel 10 lineup will not use a Samsung 5G modem as Google has reportedly switched to a MediaTek solution, likely aiming to prioritize efficiency

Google is reportedly planning an internal overhaul of the Pixel 10 series’ specifications, starting with a move away from Samsung and a partnership with TSMC to mass produce the Tensor G5 SoC on the 3nm “N3E” process. Additionally, the latest report mentions that the Mountain View company plans to use MediaTek modems instead of the Korean giant’s modems, which will likely improve the power efficiency of next year’s flagship series.

There is negligible information mentioned about the MediaTek modem used in the Pixel 10 models, but the report states that it will support the 3GPP Release 17 5G standard

Until the Pixel 9 family, Google relied on Samsung’s manufacturer and its 5G modems, which are used in these models. However, Android Authority reports that these aspects will change with the launch of the Pixel 10. As for the modem used, it’s expected to use the unreleased T900, which is an interesting revelation as we previously reported that Xiaomi’s in-house 3nm chipset, due to be announced next year, will also benefit from this baseband chip . Unfortunately, not much is known about this modem, but it could be based on MediaTek’s “M85” IP.

A big advantage is that the T900 should support the latest 5G standard Release 17, meaning it should be compatible with a wide range of networks and use less power compared to the previous generation versions. Google may cut its alliance with Samsung as the company is aware of overheating problems on its Pixel series and wants to remedy the situation by introducing more efficient silicon. Given that Samsung’s first-generation 3nm GAA process suffers from yield issues, the only logical alternative is TSMC for the Tensor G5 and Tensor G6, followed by MediaTek for the baseband chips.

This is the first we’ve heard of Google switching to MediaTek’s 5G modems for the Pixel 10 lineup, and while Android Authority’s Kamila Wojciechowska has a solid track record on the company’s future plans, we’ll Always remind readers to take this information with a pinch of salt and we will be back with further updates.
