Luka Doncic is not happy with the Mavs’ defense against the Warriors despite the win

The Dallas Mavericks defeated the Golden State Warriors in an offensive shootout on Sunday night, winning 143-133. Luka Doncic recorded a historic triple-double with 45 points, 13 assists, 11 rebounds, three steals and two rebounds. Despite the win and his solid defensive performance, he wasn’t happy with his team’s defense on Sunday.

When asked in his postgame press conference what it means that they can find a way to win when their opponent makes 27 threes, which is the first time a team has ever lost by 27 or more threes, responded Doncic: “That means we” We need to defend better, I think our defense needs to step up. Of course we have a lot of weapons, but at the end of the day we have to rebound the ball and when we rebound we are a very dangerous team.”

Doncic’s individual defensive performance was better than the national media would give him credit for, as he now ranks second in the NBA with 2.1 steals per game and has a career-best defensive rating of 109.7. He jokes that he should be on First Team All-Defense, but he’s definitely improved in that area.

Dallas has been particularly good on defense this season, posting the 11th-best defensive rating so far. They had a few games like this where the opponent scored a ton of points, but when they had PJ Washington in the lineup their defense was better for the most part, except for Sunday night.

The Warriors and Mavericks combined for 48 three-pointers in this game, more than they have ever made in an NBA game. Dallas allowed four different Warriors (Andrew Wiggins, Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Jonathan Kuminga) to score more than 20 points, something they will have to take into account the next time these teams play.
