We were too distracted by Keanu Reeves in this Sonic 3 video to notice that it ruined the reveal of a major Shadow character

A new Sonic 3 video may have just revealed a major Shadow spoiler – but we were too distracted by Keanu Reeves to notice.

Possible spoilers for Sonic 3 follow. You have been warned.

At the 45-second mark of a Keanu Reeves-centric featurette (which you can watch in full below), a brief flash of a scene in space is shown.

The space setting is nothing new – and was previously revealed via the press kit for a SEGA Genesis game cartridge to accompany the film. What Is What is new, however, is the detail of two yellow flickering lights racing towards the space station at Mach speed.

Sonic fans happily jumped to conclusions and suggested that this was the transformation of Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and Shadow (Keanu Reeves) into Super Sonic and Super Shadow, respectively.

Super Sonic – the Super Saiyan-like ability that activates once Sonic possesses all seven Chaos Emeralds – was previously seen during Eggman’s defeat in the final act of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. However, Shadow’s latent powers haven’t been revealed yet – but they are a surefire indication that Sonic 3 will closely follow several storylines in Sonic Adventure 2.

In this 2001 Dreamcast game, the game ends with both Super Sonic and Super Shadow racing through space in a similar fashion to the Sonic 3 featurette. The enemy there was the Biolizard – but it remains to be seen what Sonic and Shadow will do to save the day.

Sonic 3 stars Ben Schwartz, Keanu Reeves, Jim Carrey, Idris Elba, James Marsden, Krysten Ritter, Tika Sumpter and Colleen O’Shaughnessey. The film is scheduled to be released in cinemas on December 20th in the US and December 21st in the UK.
