Schumer calls for 360 degree radar system for NY, NJ to detect drones

As unidentified aircraft traverse the night skies across parts of the United States, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., called on the Department of Homeland Security to deploy 360-degree radar systems to detect drones in New York and the New Jersey region.

“Our locals who have questions about these drones shouldn’t have to shake an eight-ball to get an answer,” Schumer said, holding a magical eight-ball toy in one hand and a picture of a drone in the other.

“They want real answers, and Robin can provide those answers, and that’s why we want them here,” Schumer said, likely referring to the Dutch company Robin Radar Systems, which makes such systems.

The Robin Radar Systems website states: “Bird, bat or drone, our 360° radar systems log thousands of observations and scan every second to precisely track and classify them.”

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement Sunday: “In response to my calls for additional resources, our federal partners are deploying a state-of-the-art drone detection system to New York State.”

He said “we are not aware of any foreign involvement” in connection with “the sightings in the northeast.”
