The Tampa Bay Buccaneers take first place in the most important NFL statistics after their victory in Week 15

After a big 40-17 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are feeling pretty good.

You have good reasons for it. After all, at 8-6, the Buccaneers have secured the lead in the NFC South Division for at least another week, with the opportunity to extend that lead if the Las Vegas Raiders show them a good performance and defeat the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night.

And while that’s certainly the most important stat right now, Tampa Bay is also feeling pretty good about its offense, which gained 506 yards of offense in Week 15, making it the only team in the NFL to have eight games with 400 or more yards of offense.

To climb to the top of the NFL standings, the Bucs became the first Chargers opponent to score on its first two possessions of the game. In fact, coordinator Liam Coen’s unit didn’t produce a single drive on a punt, scoring on 9 of 12 possessions Sunday afternoon.

Those impressive numbers also include six consecutive shots on goal, a streak that only ended because the game ended.

Among the great performances on offense for the Buccaneers was receiver Mike Evans, who posted a season-high nine catches and 159 yards gained, placing him in the top 25 in NFL history in receiving yards and in the top 40 in league history in receiving yards receiving yards.

Perhaps more importantly, Evans now has 749 receiving yards this season, 251 shy of Jerry Rice’s record of 11 consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. That means with three games remaining until the end of the regular season, Evans will need to average 84 yards per game to reach the mark.

The chances that Evans can accomplish this are increased by the fact that Tampa Bay faces three teams in the NFL’s bottom 12 in passing yards allowed per game.
