Apple is working on a “giant foldable iPad”: report

Apple is reportedly working on a “giant foldable iPad” as it looks for ways to expand its product lineup.

The device will be “something like a giant iPad that unfolds to the size of two iPad Pros side by side,” Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported in his “Power On” newsletter on Sunday. Current iPad Pros are available in 11-inch and 13-inch models.

The Cupertino, California-based company is reportedly aiming to eliminate the screen “wrinkles” typically found in foldable devices. Previous versions limited the crease but did not completely eliminate it.

According to the report, the foldable iPad could hit stores by 2028. It’s been in development for several years, but details about its capabilities – such as which operating system it will use – are still sparse.

Gurman speculated that the device would incorporate “elements” of both Apple’s current iPads and Mac computers, adding that the company’s iPadOS software should be able to run more advanced apps by 2028.

Apple has also been working on the possibility of a foldable iPhone, although Gurman said he doesn’t expect it to arrive “until 2026 at the earliest.”

Apple shares were flat in Monday trading. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The company still makes the majority of its revenue from sales of the iPhone and recently unveiled its first AI-enabled version of the device.

However, Apple is increasingly trying to generate revenue from other devices and software offerings as smartphone sales have declined in recent years.

Last year, Apple introduced a $3,500 Vision Pro virtual reality headset to much fanfare – but scaled back production due to weak sales.
