Police say several people were injured in a shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin.

Madison police said they responded to the shooting at 10:57 a.m. Monday and asked people to avoid the area around the school.

Multiple casualties were reported, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes told CNN, but an exact number was not provided. Several injured people were transported to hospitals, including students and a staff member who suffered potentially fatal injuries, he added.

“Several injuries were reported. This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Further information will be released as it becomes available,” police said in an incident report.

The suspect was stopped by law enforcement, Barnes said. Police are conducting further searches of the building and vehicles.

Police announced various road closures and urged people to avoid the area.

According to its website, Abundant Life Christian School is a K-12 school with approximately 390 students.

The school has a 28-acre campus and its website lists “smaller class sizes” aimed at students from about 200 families in the Dane County area.

The school planned to close after this week for the Christmas holidays.
