At least five people died in the shooting at Abundant Life Church, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes told reporters.

After officers responded to an active shooter call at the school at 10:57 a.m., they found several gunshot victims, including an unidentified juvenile who Barnes said could be the shooter.

“Today is a sad, sad day,” Barnes said. “Not just for Madison, but for our entire country.”

Officials are still working to clear the school.

Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson responded to reports of the shooting, which left several injured, in a post on X.

“My sincerest condolences and prayers go out to all the victims of the tragedy at Abundant Life Christian School,” Johnson wrote. “I will continue to monitor the situation closely.”

According to its website, Abundant Life Christian School is a private Christian school founded in 1978 that educates children in kindergarten through 12th grade.

The campus spans 28 acres and is one of three Impact Christian Schools campus locations. The school’s website also states that it has approximately 335 students.

Abundant Life Christian School features small class sizes with a “warm and respectful atmosphere.”

A security alert was sent to phones in the area at 11:20 a.m., NBC affiliate WMTV reported.

“Pro Madison PD – Police response to the 4900 block of East Buckeye Road in Madison. Avoid the area,” the warning reads, according to a screenshot.

A resident told the news station she heard gunshots.

Police are investigating a possible shooting that left multiple people injured at Abundant Life Christian School.

Madison police have lined the road leading to the school and closed Buckeye Road and asked the community to avoid that area.

According to NBC News affiliate WMTV, parents have gathered at a reunion site at a nearby health clinic.
