Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes speaks

Six other people were injured, with injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening.

Madison police had previously incorrectly said five people were killed and five were injured

Barnes said his department believes the shooter was a student at the school.

Roads around the 4900 block of Buckeye Road will be closed due to a law enforcement investigation.

Parents and students met at the SSM Health building near the intersection of East Buckeye Road and Stoughton Road.

“It’s a little shocking. On TV you always see it happening somewhere else,” said Guy Nelson, who lives near the school. “You know, you feel bad, but you don’t notice the situation when it’s here at your back. It’s basically a block away from me. So it’s my backyard and it’s very scary.”

A spokesperson for the Madison Metropolitan School District said La Follette High School, Sennett Middle School and Elvehjem Elementary School were placed on hold due to the shooting.

Gov. Tony Evers released the following statement regarding the shooting:

I am closely following the incident at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison. We pray for the children, educators and entire Abundant Life school community as we wait for more information and are grateful for the first responders who responded quickly.
