Tips from Alabama Power for a lower electric bill this holiday season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – What’s not to love about Christmas lights? They’re festive, they’re bright, they can make the most beautiful decorations, and they can drive up your electric bill at the end of the month.

Well, maybe the latter isn’t exactly a holiday favorite, but Alabama Power has some tips for both showing off the Christmas lights and not breaking the holiday budget.

One tip is to choose either indoor lighting or Christmas lights. Shining both colors at the same time can slightly affect the effect of the decorations and use more energy. So let the Christmas lights shine brightly!

And remember to turn them off when you go to bed.

Another tip costs more on your purchase receipt, but saves money on your electric bill and lasts longer.

LED Christmas lights use up to 90% less electricity than incandescent bulbs and can last up to 25% longer. Think of it as an upfront investment in a lower electric bill!

Making your home visible from space with Christmas lights can use more energy than you normally would throughout the year. So to compensate, why not unplug some devices that still use energy even when idle? According to Alabama Power, unused televisions, gaming consoles, computers and phone chargers waste the most energy when not in use.

Another way to save energy for your lighting displays is to not leave the chimney open when you are not using it. Closing the chimney damper or flue when not in use can prevent cold air from entering your home.

Finally, when it comes to preparing a Whoville-worthy feast, Alabama Power recommends baking multiple dishes at the same time whenever possible. And remember not to open the door or let the heat escape.

Yes, it smells so good! But at the end of the month it hits your electricity bill.
