Tomlin is optimistic about Watt’s availability vs. Ravens

With the division title on the line for the Steelers’ game against the Ravens in Baltimore on Saturday, head coach Mike Tomlin leans toward an inclusive mentality when it comes to players dealing with injuries.

He is not ready to exclude anyone.

That includes star outside linebacker TJ Watt, who suffered a sprained ankle in Sunday’s 27-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Watt left the field unassisted after briefly lying on the ground holding his ankle with 4:50 left in the game. He didn’t return.

But Tomlin said he saw Watt at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex Monday morning and Watt looked much better.

“Based on what I saw today, I’m optimistic about TJ’s availability,” Tomlin said.

That would be good news for the Steelers (10-4), who can clinch the AFC North title with a win over the Ravens (9-5) on Saturday.

Miami and Indianapolis’ losses on Sunday have already secured them a spot in the playoffs. But beating the Ravens for the ninth time in the last ten meetings and winning the division title would give the Steelers at least one home playoff game.

Having Watt available would greatly improve their chances of achieving this.

With his seven tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble in Sunday’s loss to the Eagles, Watt has 54 tackles, 11.5 sacks, tied for third in the NFL, a best six forced fumbles and 18 tackles for a loss , which is also in the league the NFL.

The Steelers did not have fellow outside linebacker Alex Highsmith available for their first meeting with the Ravens this season, an 18-16 win at Acrisure Stadium, which meant Nick Herbig started in his place. Since then, they also added veteran outside linebacker Preston Smith at the trade deadline, making the position one of the deeper ones on the roster.

But the Steelers also have 1-10 games in his career in which Watt doesn’t play.

“All rushmen are an important component when it comes to a quarterback’s mobility, especially (Baltimore’s) Lamar Jackson,” Tomlin said. “You know, signing Preston was hugely important for us. He is a veteran. He knows what to do who is in the game and I expect it to stay that way.”

Watt isn’t the only player who was injured Sunday or missed the game due to an injury that could potentially be available to the Steelers this week.

Tomlin said he is also optimistic about the potential returns of defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi (groin), safety DeShon Elliott (hamstring) and wide receiver George Pickens (hamstring), all of whom missed the game against the Eagles due to injuries, as well as cornerback Donte Jackson ( back) and quarterback Justin Fields (abdomen), who were injured during the loss.

“The doors are open for these guys,” Tomlin said. “As I sit here today, none of these six guys can be described as challenging. We’ll probably start with partial involvement with them (Tuesday) and increase that and make decisions as the week goes on.”

Regardless of who is there and who is not, Tomlin wants to practice and play to win against the Ravens, even if a spot in the postseason is already secured.

“We’re playing for the division title this week,” Tomlin said. “If you’re healthy, you’ll play.”
