Alabama football starting DB will transfer to Notre Dame: reports

Former Alabama football defensive lineman DeVonta Smith has reportedly found his new college home. According to multiple reports, Smith will transfer to Notre Dame.

On3’s Pete Nakos first reported the move. Smith, one of Alabama’s starting safeties this season, entered the portal when the current sign-up window opened, following the conclusion of the 2024 regular season.

Smith spent four seasons in Tuscaloosa. He battled injuries in 2023 but persevered despite the change in coaching staff and was finally able to get on the field this season.

He was UA’s primary starter at the safety position, which Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Kane Wommack refers to as the “Husky.” Smith accounted for 30 tackles, one forced fumble and five pass breakups in 2024.

Smith will join a Notre Dame team coming off a College Football Playoff appearance. The Fighting Irish will open the CFP with a first-round home game against Indiana, making them the No. 5 seed in the event.

Meanwhile, Alabama’s 2024 season still isn’t over. The Crimson Tide will face Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl after missing the CFP field by one spot due to losses to Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Oklahoma.

The game is scheduled to begin Dec. 31 at 11 a.m. CT in Tampa. It will air on ESPN.

The transfer portal will remain open to students until December 29th.
