3 things to do in Glendale if you need plans for your Thanksgiving weekend

If you’re visiting the Phoenix area from the north or east this Thanksgiving, you’re probably hoping to spend as much time outside as possible before the weather cools down again.

If you’re in the area year-round, the holidays can be a great way to spend time doing family-friendly activities.

From adventurous, nature-loving families to those who prefer to stay indoors, there’s something to do in Glendale for everyone.

While there are always other options in the metro area, like visiting the Phoenix Art Museum or renting a paddleboat at Tempe Town Lake, here are three things you can do with your family within Glendale city limits.

Get in the holiday spirit with Glendale Glitters

Glendale Glitters returns to downtown Glendale for its 31st anniversary and will hold a launch ceremony on November 29th and 30th from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., with the tree lighting on November 29th.

There are artists singing Christmas carols, Christmas treats and local vendors – the perfect opportunity to pick up some last minute gifts.

The tree lighting ceremony begins at 5:45 p.m. Nov. 29 and will be held at the Glendale Civic Center, 5750 W. Glenn Drive. Free parking is also available in a garage at 5825 W. Palmaire Ave. available.

Do your holiday shopping in the Westgate Entertainment District

The Westgate Entertainment District is one of the West Valley’s most popular attractions and offers something for everyone.

The mall has no shortage of shops, restaurants and entertainment options. There will also be a number of holiday events, including an outdoor ice rink.

Westgate is also essentially opposite the Tanger Outlets, where you can grab cheaper prices on your Christmas shopping.

Hike in Thunderbird Conservation Park

Located on 59th Avenue between Deer Valley and Pinnacle Peak Roads, Thunderbird Conservation Park offers trails for people of all experience levels, making it the perfect place for a family hike.

According to the city’s website, trails range from 0.25 to about five miles in length, with difficulty levels ranging from easy to moderately strenuous.

The 1,185 hectare park in the Hedgpeth Hills also offers plenty of wildlife viewing opportunities as the park is home to more than 50 species of birds.

Trails are available for hiking, biking, running and horseback riding. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset and is open to dogs.
