Vick is negotiating with Norfolk State for the head football coach position

NORFOLK, VA (WTKR) – Could Michael Vick return to Hampton Roads to work as a college coach? It certainly seems that way.

The Virginian Pilot reports that Vick is in discussions with Norfolk State to become the school’s next head football coach. The report said Vick expects both sides to find a solution “soon.”

Two Norfolk State officials told News 3 they would not comment on the ongoing search until a candidate is selected.

Vick has no coaching experience but would certainly be an impactful addition to the green and gold. He was one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game and led Ferguson and Warwick High Schools before playing nationally at Virginia Tech. He led the Hokies to an undefeated regular season in 1999 and earned them a spot in the national championship game against Florida State.

The Newport News native declared for the NFL Draft in early 2001 and was selected with the No. 1 overall pick by the Atlanta Falcons. He became the first quarterback to rush for 1,000 yards in 2006 and was a quarterback who played the game like no one before him.

After serving 21 months in prison for a federal dogfighting conviction, Vick worked tirelessly to come back and rebuild his image. He resumed his career with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009 and was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 2010. After five seasons with the Eagles, Vick finished his NFL career in backup roles with the Jets and Steelers before retiring in 2017. The former quarterback has been an NFL analyst for FOX since hanging up his cleats.

Vick has returned to Hampton Roads on numerous occasions for charity work and hosting soccer camps.

Norfolk State fired Dawson Odums as head coach late last month after he led the program for four years and compiled a 15-31 record. After leading the Spartans to a 6-5 record in his first season in 2021, the team stumbled to a 2-9 record the following season. NSU posted records of 3-8 and 4-8 in its last two campaigns, respectively.

The Spartans may not be the only suitor for Vick’s coaching services. ESPN reported Monday afternoon that Sacramento State is also in talks with the former quarterback in hopes of having him lead the program.

This is a developing story and we will continue to bring you the latest updates both on air and online.
