Jaylen Mbakwe is entering the transfer portal

The Crimson Tide’s defensive strength took a major hit when ALcom’s Nick Kelly reported that Alabama defensive back Jaylen Mbakwe will enter the transfer portal.

Mbakwe was a true freshman for Alabama last season and was a contributor on both defense and special teams for the Crimson Tide. Mbakwe was a five-star cornerback prospect from Clay-Chalkville High School in Birmingham, Alabama. Mbakwe was the Crimson Tide’s starting punt returner and was used heavily in the Alabama defense, subbing in at cornerback and even playing in Kane Wommack’s Husky defense.

Mbakwe totaled 15 tackles in 2024, along with two pass breakups and one interception.

Bama On3’s Charlie Potter reported that Mbakwe was offered a seven-figure deal from another school and wanted a guarantee of a starting job. Alabama may not be able to offer the starting guarantee with Zabien Brown likely to return and Domani Jackson facing a decision about whether or not to go to the NFL.

Additionally, there are rumors that Mbakwe can play both ways, which we recently saw from Colorado star Travis Hunter, who won the 2024 Heisman Trophy.

The Crimson Tide already saw movement in the secondary with Jahlil Hurley and DeVonta Smith leaving Alabama earlier in the portal cycle. Mbakwe is the latest blow to Alabama’s secondary.
