The Lakers’ LeBron James reflects on the “mental challenge” of the current season

Los Angeles Lakers star forward LeBron James returned to the court after missing the team’s last two games with a foot injury. The 39-year-old helped lead his team to a solid 116-110 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday night.

James nearly contributed to a triple-double with 18 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. The Lakers lost both meetings in which the team’s leader was out, and they were fortunate to have their floor general back on the court as if there had never been an injury.

Ahead of his return, James initially missed last Sunday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers due to a foot injury. It was then reported that James would miss a number of training sessions the following week, including one for “personal reasons”. There was no exact timetable as to when the veteran striker would return to the team; he was merely listed as “everyday.”

In Sunday’s game against Memphis, the Lakers seemed to be in full swing, building a 20-point lead in the third quarter. It felt like Los Angeles was comfortably in control of the game until star center Anthony Davis briefly left the game with a shoulder injury. The Grizzlies staged a massive comeback almost immediately, cutting the lead to single digits.

Fortunately, Davis returned in the fourth quarter and finished the game leading all scorers with an incredible 40-point performance. The Lakers improved to 14-12 and are currently in 10th place in the Eastern Conference.

Although James’ absence from previous games was alarming, he assured fans that everything was under control after Sunday’s game.

“I feel pretty good,” LeBron told reporters after the game. “It’s very rare during a season that you can utilize a schedule, and I was able to do that last week.”

When asked how he spent his free time during the week, LeBron confirmed that he did a lot of “training and rehab.” Reporters also inquired about the Lakers star’s mental health, as many were concerned about what “personal matters” could be keeping LeBron away from his team.

LeBron was asked if this season was mentally taxing, to which James replied:

“No, no different than any other year. The season has always been a matter of mind…you all know what word I want to use but won’t use…but every year has its own challenges. This year is no different.”
