Randy Moss, Cris Carter and Jake Reed formed one of the most iconic receiver trios in NFL history. “Three Deep” had a lot of yards and highlights for the Minnesota Vikings.

When Carter and Reed went to the coin toss before the game on Monday night, their famous teammate wasn’t there. But the two brought with them a memory of Moss.

Carter and Reed came to midfield and held up a No. 84 Vikings jersey with Moss’ name on it. Moss announced last week that he was battling cancer and had successful surgery. Moss was an extremely popular Vikings player and the crowd began chanting his name after Reed and Carter brought out his jersey.

That wasn’t the last tribute. When Justin Jefferson, the Vikings’ current star receiver, caught a touchdown in the first quarter, he found the camera and shouted, drawing the heart symbol with his hands, “We love you, Randy!” This is for you!”

Moss was grateful for the love that came from Minnesota.

Another poignant tribute to Moss came Sunday when Carolina Panthers receiver Adam Thielen, a Minnesota native, wore a Moss Vikings jersey to Carolina’s game against the Dallas Cowboys. Thielen said after the game that Moss was the reason he wanted to play football.

Moss, who has retired from ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown,” was drafted by the Vikings in 1998 and had one of the best rookie seasons of all time with 17 touchdowns. He played his first seven seasons in Minnesota and then returned to the Vikings for a brief stint near the end of his career.
