Liam Payne’s ‘haunting’ final moments recalled by another hotel guest

Liam Payne’s ‘haunting’ final moments recalled by another hotel guest

A hotel guest who witnessed Liam Payne’s fatal fall is still haunting the One Direction singer’s death.

Bret Watson was in Buenos Aires for his wedding at CasaSur Palermo in mid-October. On October 16, he was on the first floor of the hotel with his wedding planner when he witnessed Payne fall to his death.

According to a preliminary autopsy report, Payne fell from a third-floor balcony at the hotel and died from multiple injuries and “internal and external” bleeding. He was 31.

Watson revealed in TMZ Presents: Liam Payne: Who’s to Blame? that before they saw Payne fall to his death, he and his wedding guests saw the singer becoming increasingly drunk and behaving more erratically as the day went on. Watson said he saw hotel staff carrying Payne by his arms and legs from the lobby to his hotel room. Payne was then left alone in the room and shortly afterwards fell from the balcony.

Watson said that after watching Payne fall, he and the wedding planner ran to the balcony and immediately identified the deceased musician because he fell on his back, face up. “We could tell it was Liam straight away and he was motionless,” Watson said, according to TMZ.

“Time really stopped or slowed down. Immediately afterward, the wedding planner and I looked at each other and realized, “Oh my God, this is real.” This actually happened.’ ”

Watson said the sound of Payne’s body hitting the ground was more traumatic than watching him fall. “First of all, it’s heartbreaking to see someone fall like that, but seeing it and then hearing the impact on the ground was more powerful than seeing him fall,” he added.

“Then seeing the immediate aftermath is something that is burned into my brain,” he said. “Something I’ll never forget.”

In the days following Payne’s death, a guest told PEOPLE he heard “a lot of noise” coming from Payne’s room, including “a really loud, violent scream” on the day of his fall.

“I thought it was construction work. I thought they were working on the room,” the hotel guest said, explaining that the noise sounded like “heavy lifting” or “bangs.”

The guest witnessed hotel staff “walking in and out” of Payne’s room, where there was “more noise” around 4:30 p.m. Police were called to the scene shortly after 5:00 p.m. local time and Payne is believed to have died shortly afterwards.

Minutes after the noise started again, the guest recalled, “I heard a really loud, violent scream.”

Weeks after his death, Argentina’s Penal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office issued a press release saying that three people had been arrested and charged in Argentina in connection with Payne’s death. The suspects are accused of abandoning a person and then killing them, as well as providing and arranging narcotics.
