“The White Lotus”: First trailer for the third season suggests more satire and intrigue | The White Lotus

Once again, trouble is on the horizon for White Lotus Resorts. The first teaser trailer for the third season of the acclaimed HBO show suggests as much intrigue, mystery and inflammatory social criticism as the first two – this time on the beaches of Thailand.

The 90-second trailer reinforces creator Mike White’s suggestion that the Emmy-winning series, which lampooned affluent privilege at a Hawaiian resort in its first season before devolving into a bedroom farce in Sicily in its second season, will return in its third Season would appeal to Westerners’ interest in Eastern spirituality.

In the teaser, stars Jason Isaacs, Walton Goggins, Carrie Coon, Leslie Bibb, Michelle Monaghan, Patrick Schwarzenegger and others are seen attending both parties and “stress management meditations” at what is supposedly another White Lotus resort in Thailand. “Everyone runs from pain to pleasure,” a Buddhist monk says in the trailer. “But they get there only to feel more pain.”

Natasha Rothwell, a fan favorite from season one, returns to Thailand as unhappy aspiring masseuse Belinda on an exchange program – “I’m starting to feel like something good is going to come out of this,” she says. There’s also a shot of a body bag – suggesting that, like the first two seasons, someone doesn’t return from the luxury hotel alive.

White had previously touted the third season of the series, which he also wrote and directed, as a possible exploration of death and a fascination with Eastern spirituality, which may align with Belinda’s interest in wellness. “The first season was about money, and the second season was about sex,” he said in an HBO clip for the season two finale. “I think the third season would perhaps be a satirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality.”

HBO has partnered with the Tourism Authority of Thailand to support production and promotion of the third season, which was filmed last spring at the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui as well as locations in Phuket and Bangkok. Lalisa Manobal, the rapper nicknamed Lisa and the only Thai member of the K-pop group Blackpink, makes her acting debut in season three as an employee of White Lotus – and, as the trailer at least suggests, a resort dancer.

“The White Lotus” has been a critical success and an award-winning behemoth since its debut as a limited series in 2021. The first season earned 20 Emmy nominations and 10 wins, including Best Limited Series. The second season, which aired in 2022, received 23 nominations and won five, including one for best cast and best dramatic actress for fan favorite Jennifer Coolidge, the only cast member remaining between the two seasons.

The third season will premiere on HBO on February 16th.
