Warner Bros. is pretty sure that Barbie 2 isn’t coming out yet

The world may have moved on to “Glicked,” but Barbenheimer’s 2023 box office hit is still making a big impact on Hollywood. Oppenheimer took home a slew of Oscars, including Best Picture, but what about the other coveted prize many have been clamoring for? Barbie: a sequel? Back when the hype was at its rose-tinted and most intense, writer-director Greta Gerwig didn’t seem particularly interested. But that hasn’t stopped the rumors, including a new one today that teases a Barbie 2 in the future.

The Hollywood Reporter quotes a “well-informed source” as saying that Gerwig and co-writer Noah Baumbach “have been hatching an idea for the sequel after already bringing it to Warner Bros. Although it is said to be in its ‘early stages,’ it is understood that the discovery of the story has opened the door to deal talks, which itself is still early, another source with direct knowledge confirms .”

However, don’t get a little upset. Along with these two tidbits of information came two strong denials. Gerwig and Baumbach’s rep said, “This reporting is not legitimate,” while a representative for Warner Bros. said THR’s reporting was “inaccurate.”

As expected, there are no further details, including whether Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling could return for a sequel, along with other cast members. Late last year, Gerwig said that writing the original script had created enough material for an entire screenplay Ken Spin-off, but there’s no way to know which direction Barbie 2-If Barbie 2 ever happens – could take time.

However, you can’t blame whoever is starting these rumors for trying to hype up a sequel to the billion-dollar hit, whether real or imagined. Mattel, for example, probably won’t make as much money from the View Master movie it’s trying to make.
