Indiana Basketball Game Notes – Game 6 vs. No. 3/4 Gonzaga

Opening tip

• Indiana University continues its 125th competitive season of men’s basketball with a consolation round game against No. 3/4 Gonzaga in the Battle 4 Atlantis on Thursday, Nov. 28, at 2:30 p.m. ET in the Imperial Ballroom. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 with Beth Mowins (pxp) and Debbie Antonelli (analyst).

• The Bulldogs enter the game with a 5-1 record under Hall of Fame head coach Mark Few. Redshirt sophomore forward Braden Huff (14.8 points per game), sixth-year senior guard Khalif Battle (14.7), and fifth-year senior forward Graham Ike (13.0 ), all score at least 13.0 points per night. Senior guard Ryan Nembhard has dished out 59 assists while dishing out just seven assists in six games.

Series story

• The two programs have met four times, all on neutral ground. The teams split the overall series. Indiana defeated Gonzaga 76-75 in the second round of the 2002 Maui Invitational. IU, behind tournament MVP Bracey Wrightdefeated Virginia to win the Maui Invitational championship.

• The Hoosiers also earned a 70-57 victory over the Bulldogs in the opening round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament in Sacramento, behind a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double from All-American DJ White.

• Gonzaga’s two wins came in the second round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament (90-80) in Salt Lake City and the 2008 Hartford Classic (70-54) in Indianapolis.

Out last time

• No. 14/15 Indiana (4-1) was defeated by Louisville by a score of 89-61 in the opening round of the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis on Wednesday, Nov. 27 at the Imperial Ballroom.

• Junior forward Malik Reneau scored a game-high 21 points on 7 of 12 shots from the floor. The game was his eighth 20-point game of his career. He added seven rebounds, four assists and a block, all team highs. Senior Center for the sixth year Oumar Ballo scored 11 points and six boards.

Second year jump for Mgbako

• Sophomore forward Mackenzie Mgbako Scored a career-high 31 points on 13 of 17 shooting from the floor and 4 of 5 shooting from beyond the arc in Indiana’s win over SIUE on Nov. 6 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

• The 31 points scored marked the most in a season debut for a Hoosier since 17-year NBA veteran Eric Gordon dropped 33 points in his collegiate debut against Chattanooga on Nov. 12, 2007. The program record is held by former All-American Jimmy Rayl for points in a season opener when he scored 35 points against Virginia on December 1, 1962.

• His total of 49 points in two games (24.5 points per game) marked the most by an IU player in the first two games of a season since James Blackmon Jr. scored 49 points (26 vs. Kansas, 23 vs. UMASS Lowell ). Early 2016-17.

• The Gladstone, New Jersey native leads the Hoosiers in scoring, ranking 11th in the Big Ten with 16.6 points per game. He is the only B1G player to average at least 16.0 points per game this season while shooting better than 50.0% from the floor, 50.0% from the 3-point line and 90.0% from beyond Free throw line shoots.

Reneau for two

• Junior forward Malik Reneau is averaging 15.0 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game through the first five games of the season.

• The Miami, Florida native is shooting 52.9% (27 of 51) from the floor and 85.7% (18 of 21) from the free throw line in 28.7 minutes per game.

• Reneau has scored more than 15 points 22 times in his career, including both games this season, and has exceeded the 20-point threshold eight times.
