The shooting occurred in the study hall of a classroom on the campus east of downtown Madison, police said. A second-grader called 911 at 10:57 a.m. to report the shooting, Barnes said. Just three miles away, a group of officers gathered for special emergency training, Banes said – “so what started out as a day of training became an actual thing.”

Madison police identified the shooter as Natalie Rupnow, who went by the name Samantha. Investigators are still working to determine the motive for the shooting, and it is not clear whether the slain teacher and student were targets. Police searched the shooter’s home and also examined an online document allegedly about the shooting.

Wandel hadn’t spoken to her father in years, but she wasn’t hard to find. Neither Marinelli’s brother nor his sister, who had kept in touch on birthdays and holidays. But everyone only found out about his death when Marinelli’s brother sent him a Christmas card that came back unopened.

Wandel remains stunned by the treatment of her father, who, as a former military member, had the right to be buried in a veterans cemetery, but whose body was initially sent to a body broker in another state.

Providing unclaimed bodies for medical research is widely considered unethical, and most major medical schools — and some states — have stopped the practice. And it still goes on.
