What the Falcons had to say after their 15-9 win over the Raiders

What the Falcons had to say after their 15-9 win over the Raiders

On the way to the future: “I’m just taking it one game at a time. Of course we don’t want to prejudge anything… in the NFL you can lose any game. … We can’t lose another game to achieve what we want. The Giants are our biggest opponent and our biggest focus right now. That has to be the game plan for this week.”

Where the crime is now: “It was just scenarios and situations. There were ball losses and penalties. Obviously we need to eliminate this. But we cannot always reset ourselves in certain situations. If we want to be the offense we want to be, we have to be as disciplined as possible. We have to get these little things out. I feel like when we do that, we’re really dominant offensively. I think it’s just these little, nuanced things. Especially the last four weeks when we didn’t live up to our standards.”

In support of the storming attack: “It felt great. We have to do what we have to do to win. … We want to get the ball into the end zone more. But when we really get going in the running game, the seven guys at the front create paths and holes for us to run through. … If we have to run the ball 30 times, then we had to do that to win. Go out and dominate.”

How close are you to breaking a prolonged period: “I feel like I was a guy in a way. One or two people away. We’ll get it right in practice. A big part of it depends on me breaking tackles. Just keep breaking tackles. Yeah man, we’re close. When we start breaking up those runs and getting those 50 and 60 yard runs, the sky’s the limit. We will try to get them in the next game.”

Drake London, wide receiver

On the offensive: “Just go back to the lab, keep working and come up with new things. … We have to get points. It’s that simple. I think we need to be more aggressive. But at the end of the day a win is a win and I can’t complain about that.”

To stop the losing streak: “It feels great, especially considering his long (expletive) flight. So, yeah.”

On his 30-yard touchdown: “He looked at Kirk and sold it. Helped me. He really ran the route for me. It was great to get back in the end zone.”

More about his touchdown: “It was great to get back in the end zone. It’s always good to get back in the box.”

Jessie Bates III, security

To win: It’s been almost a whole month since we went winless. To achieve that, the offense will certainly hope they played a little better. But at this point, a win is a win. We look forward to continuing to build on this.”

About the game against Desmond Ridder: “It was a bit strange. He was my locker mate last year. This year I’m just glad he had the opportunity to go out and show that he can still play in this league. I joked with him. I ask him how he and his family are doing. How his little one was doing. It was definitely nice to see him.”

On the Hail Mary pass at the end: “You see all year long sometimes the game ends in a touchdown. You see people scoring high on these “Ave Marias.” I just talked to Kevin (King) and Justin (Simmons) about who’s going to be the jumper, who’s going to be the tipper and who’s going to be the backline guy.”

Nate Landman, linebacker

To play more base defense: “If you look at the past games, we’re pretty happy with our base lineups when it’s 12, 13 or heavy personnel. I think we shine a little bit there. We can stop the run. Pretty good segue into game-action gameplay. We are working on this in practice. I think as the week goes on we become more and more confident in these decisions and it shows on the field.”

On the defense, which has been playing solidly for 3½ quarters: “We played really tight defense there for a couple of quarters. Then we kind of took our foot off the gas. It was just unfortunate, but something we can learn from. It is always better to know the position of a victory than a defeat. Even if that didn’t happen, there were also mistakes in the first three quarters. Things we need to learn from. Things we need to get better at. Things we can look forward to when we see the film.”

On whether there was a preparation advantage for the defense because they knew Desmond Ridder so well: “Yes, but we were still undecided whether he would play or not. We kind of attack it both ways. We knew Des liked the fast game. Likes to get the ball out of his hands quickly. Obviously he is mobile. We practice zone reading a little bit and he had a few goalies, especially on fourth down. He made some plays with his legs. That’s something we’ve been chatting about all week, that he could move in the pocket. I think he did a good job today.”

On whether he spoke to Ridder after the game: “I did. We were put in the same (drafting) class together. It’s always nice to see him. He said his family is doing well. I was glad to see Des. I’m happy for him to land here and get the start.”

To end the four-game losing streak: “It was huge. It was a huge stepping stone. There must always be a good mood after a W. You can feel this atmosphere in the building. It’s easier to go to work the next day. We can’t get comfortable. This is what has hurt us in the past. We get a few wins and then we feel good. We have to keep pushing and build on this as a springboard.”

On the playoff race: “It’s the fourth quarter of the season. We have put ourselves in a difficult position. One we have to climb out of. (Beating the Raiders) was the first step and we look forward to the next step on Monday.”

Zach Harrison, defensive tackle

For safety: “Jimmy put us on the right path and we went and executed. That’s really all there is. But first and foremost you have to thank God. Just to give us the opportunity to go out and do what we love. Jimmy just got us on the right path and we executed.”

On the nuance of the call: “It was just an execution… we had a good tip from film study about what they were going to do. The (defensive) line. We just chipped away and made a play.”

If it was Slant or Bull Rush: “We just had to go.”

Kevin King, cornerback

On his fumbled recovery: “To get a turnover for the team, that’s great. We’ve been waiting for this. I saw the ball was on the ground and I just wanted to get to it.”

DeAngelo Malone, fullback

When receiving two bags: “It was an incredible blessing. I felt like the guys came here with strong engines. The boys played tirelessly. Guys just wanted to finish.”

To get more bags: “We know if we got one they would come in bunches. We play with each other. Guys have trust in each other. The guys did their best and got to the quarterback.”

KhaDarel Hodge, wide receiver

Regarding the blocked punts: “(Special teams coordinator Marquice Williams) is always planning things. He called it and it worked.”

On stopping the four-game losing streak: “A win is a win. Some are ugly. Some are great. But at the end of the day, a win is a win.”

Chris Lindstrom, right guard

On stopping the four-game slide: “It was a playoff game for us. The coach brought this to our attention. We knew it. Every away win in this league is huge.”

On the success of the running game: “It’s all about (center) Drew (Dalman) and (quarterback) Kirk (Cousins) getting us in line. We are presented. In terms of the fronts they presented to us, there were many similarities to last week. A lot of pressure. Lots of movement. It all starts with Drew really understanding us and doing a phenomenal job.

To prepare for the Giants: “It’s the NFL, you have respect for everyone. They are a really good team. They have a really good defensive line. I know they don’t have Dexter (Lawrence) anymore, but that doesn’t change anything. They are a very good unit.”

Matthew Bergeron, left guard

In support of the storming attack: “It felt good. Especially seeing Bijan reach 1,000 meters is a special feeling. He deserves everything. He works hard and so on. We need to clean up some things. We can’t be happy with what we did out there. We definitely left some stuff out there.”

To end the four-game losing streak: “It’s definitely… having that winning feeling again is definitely good, but there are some things out there that we could have done better.” We can’t be happy with that. We’re going to play some really good teams down the stretch, so we’ve got to get better.”

Ruke Orhorhoro, defensive tackle

When returning to action: “It was really good after sitting for some time (due to an ankle injury). I have some time to study. I got my body back. It was really good. It was nice to be out there with the boys again.”

On defense there were 10 tackles for loss: “We were definitely out there pursuing it. I’m just getting vertical. I try to play in the backfield to create a better pass-rush scenario.”

With 4 sacks and 6 quarterback hits: “My boy D-Lo (DeAngelo Malone) got him a two-piece (two sacks). That’s because we stop the run on first and second down and get us to third and long.”
