NFL team pays tribute to Patriots legend battling cancer

Former New England Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss was honored in several ways by the Minnesota Vikings after the Hall of Famer recently announced he is battling cancer.

Vikings greats Cris Carter and Jake Reed wore Moss’ jersey to the 50-yard line as they walked onto the field for the pregame coin toss as honorary captains. Moss played alongside Carter and Reed in Minnesota, where he began his NFL career.

Moss shared the moment on social media and wrote: “LUV U ALL!”

Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson later called out to Moss on the field. After scoring a touchdown against the Chicago Bears, Jefferson turned to a nearby camera and made a “heart” gesture with his hands.

“We love you, Randy! This is for you!” Jefferson shouted into the camera.

The Vikings defeated the Bears 30-12.

Moss played 14 seasons in the NFL and was considered one of the greatest wide receivers of all time. In recent years, Moss worked as an NFL analyst for ESPN.

However, Moss stepped down for health reasons, which he later revealed was a battle with cancer. In a video on Instagram, Moss revealed that doctors discovered a cancerous mass in the bile duct between his pancreas and liver.

“I survived cancer,” Moss said in the video. “There were some difficult times but we made it through. I didn’t think I would ever be in a position like this, as healthy as I thought I was.”

Moss said he will undergo radiation and chemotherapy as part of his treatment.

Meanwhile, Moss has received an outpouring of support across the NFL. One of the supporters is Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell, who was Moss’ teammate in New England in 2008.

“You could feel the love for him in the building tonight,” O’Connell said, via ESPN. “He means a lot to this organization. His name is on the bars of the Ring of Honor, he is a member of the Hall of Fame… and we stand behind him every step of the way. Take care of him, love him. We just wanted to do everything we could with the Monday Night Football platform. Hopefully he watched and if he enjoyed it at all, it was worth it because that’s how we feel about him.”

Moss played his first seven NFL seasons in Minnesota before joining the Raiders for two years. In 2007, he was traded to New England, where he played until he was traded again in 2010.
