Indiana Fifth District Congresswoman Victoria Spartz said on social media Monday that she is refusing to attend committee meetings or the GOP caucus.

“I remain a registered Republican, but will not sit on committees or participate in the caucus until I see Republican leadership in Congress. “I don’t need to be involved in circuses. I would rather spend more time helping @DOGE and @RepThomasMassie save our republic as the American people have ordered.”

DOGE is the acronym for the Department of Government Efficiency, which new President Donald Trump appointed Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead. It has no binding or legislative powers.

JP Etchison sent a statement to the Capital Chronicle saying, “Rep. Spartz will work harder than ever to design and implement real policies – not spectacles and committee presentations. Unfortunately, no real work is being done in the committees. Governing is about delivering policy solutions by turning bills into law and monitoring and approving spending—not about providing talking points and communicating bills.”

Spartz announced in February 2023 that she would not seek another term, and Republicans lined up to replace her. Then, a few days before the filing deadline, she changed her mind. She won her primary and general elections.

Spartz was first elected to the 5th District in 2020. The district includes portions of Hamilton, Delaware and Madison counties.

Just last week, LegiStorm reported that staff turnover at Spartz had reached a new personal high.

“Following the recent departure of Communications Director Corinne King and three other staff members, Spartz’s staff turnover in 2024 is now the highest in her four-year career as a member. Their staff turnover rate in 2024 is nearly 3.5 times the House average in 2024. This turnover rate is an understatement, as one of these former employees entered and left the office after the House salary disclosure deadline, which means that it is not yet counted towards LegiStorm’s turnover ratio.”
