Blue animated film announced by Disney+ and BBC

Bluey, the pooch and star of the Bafta-winning children’s TV show, is coming to the big screen in her first feature film.

The film will be released in cinemas in 2027 and will then be streamed in Australia on Disney+, ABC iView and ABC Kids.

BBC Studios, the commercial arm of the BBC, is working with Disney on the project.

Bluey is a Blue Heeler dog who lives with her mother, father and little sister Bingo. She turns everyday events in her life into adventures.

Series creator Joe Brumm said: “I always felt Bluey deserved a feature film. I want this to be an experiential event that the whole family can enjoy together.”

The TV series was jointly commissioned by ABC and BBC Studios in 2017 and is produced by Australian production company Ludo (a Blue Heeler is an Australian dog breed).

It’s available in more than 140 countries and is the top show on CBeebies and Disney+ in the UK. It is also the most-watched series on Disney+ worldwide this year, according to Nielsen Media Research.

The series has also won numerous awards, including the 2023 and 2024 Television Critics Association Awards and this year’s Peabody Award.

The series was streamed for more than 20 billion minutes on Disney+ in the US last year, making it one of the top 10 streaming programs in the country by minutes watched.

The film will feature the TV show’s vocal cast, including Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack as Bluey’s parents, Chilli and Bandit Heeler, as well as music by composer Joff Bush.
